I messed up

I was about to start putting some paint on the armour plates on the three miniatures of my side project. I messed up badly. First I decided to go with blue plates but that looked really bad. I went on doing some more washing on the second model, only to have it seriously messed up. On the third model I tried a strong orange on the plates and it looked pretty nice but I still wasn’t happy with the result. Beyond repair the models ended up taking a bath in my supersonic washer, stripping them clean from all paint.

I still think the colour I used as a foundation was nice and I am thinking of using it again. Maybe going with white armour plates?

Side project

I have begun on a small side-project. I did get some very nicely detailed miniatures from Anvil Industry and I decided to paint them up in a colour I don’t usually paint with. I think they look great, although they are in a very early stage.

I began by priming the miniatures with Vallejo Surface Primer Grey (74601) followed by Vallejo Surface Primer Black (74602) from bellow. Then I went over the models with Vallejo Model Air Blue RLM65 (71008) straight out of the bottle. After that I added a little Vallejo Model Air White (71001) to the mix and sprayed, from above, at some pieces standing out, like the feet and the backside of a leg. Obviously the heads and shoulders got this mix as well. After letting the paint dry for a bit I diluted Citadel Coelia Greenshade with a little thinner and washed the minis to the current state.

The easiest step

Ok, maybe today’s update isn’t as hot as I made it sound in the last post but nevertheless it is an important one. I applied Vallejo Satin Varnish (70522), slightly diluted with Vallejo Airbrush Thinner (71161), over the models. I’ve heard a recommendation of a 7:2 mix but honestly I didn’t bother too much with exact numbers here. Simply put some varnish medium into the cup of the airbrush and drip a little thinner into it. Shake it a bit and spray it over the area you wish to varnish. It doesn’t have to be more complicated than that, really. This step of the project will need to dry overnight since varnish doesn’t dry as fast as acrylic paints.

The next step will be to use a wash on the models and the applied varnish helps out with that, making it flow nicely.

Ready for the next step

Today I painted the leftover backpacks. I also did some details in metallic paints, which honestly felt like a reward. So shiny! For the metal detailing I used Vallejo Model Color Silver (70997) and Vallejo Game Color Brassy Brass (72058).

The next step will have me use the airbrush again. Can’t wait!

Backpacks

Tonight I did get the rest of the robes painted up. I also came up with how I want to paint the backpacks. I will add some brass details to them, besides the green and white, and I think the final result will look very good. The green I use is Vallejo Game Color Cayman Green (72067).

The unprimed models come from Anvil Industry and are for another project. The details of these miniatures are impressive and they offer a good portion of variation, giving a wide range of possibilities. Check them out at https://anvilindustry.co.uk/.

Heretic Astartes

Chaos Space Marines get new rules with the book Traitor’s Hate. The description at Games Workshop’s site mentions updated rules for Chaos Predator and Vindicator squadrons, tactical objectives, four new psychic disciplines and a whole bunch of formations. Traitor’s Hate also include rules for Renegade Knights. I sense this is a must for every tabletop conqueror fielding Chaos out there.

As always there will be a very limited edition of the new book; 750 copies will be printed and it looks very cool.

Besides the new formation bundles Games Workshop offer there will be at least one new miniature for sale accompanying the new book; Khârn the Betrayer – Kill! Maim! Burn! The old miniature of said champion of Chaos is still available if anyone would prefer that – not sure why, the new one looks awesome!

Additionally White Dwarf – the magazine – moves back from a weekly issue to a monthly, like it used to be. Once again will it be available for subscription. From what I’ve heard, the first issue of “new” White Dwarf seem very promising and features no less than 156 pages in A4 format. Sounds pretty good to me! Looks like I’ve got something to write down on my wish list for Christmas this year.

Available items for pre-order listed here: https://www.games-workshop.com/…
